History of Yachting
 The word "yacht" is derived from the Dutch language "jacht" and currently refers to speedy vessels in private use for pleasure cruising. Yachting, known as the "sport of kings," had its origin in the early 1600's and has enjoyed a long and varied history stretching across many nationalities and functions. Yachts, originally three-masted, full-rigged ships, large enough to be completely decked over, were favored by early explorers because they were fast while offering enough room for supplies for an extended journey. Henry Hudson travelled by a yacht, the Half Moon, in 1609 when he explored North America, and the Czar, Peter the Great, restored a Dutch yacht to create Russia's first naval vessel. The Dutch also used yachts for military purposes to pursue pirates around their Low Countries and during the Anglo-Dutch War from 1652-1654. However, the use of yachts declined as warships became larger, and they were largely consigned to the role of a courier ship because of their speed.
